A logically divided, independently running slice of a single physical IBM Power Systems server, each with its own operating system, memory, and processor allocation.
An LPAR (Logical Partition) is an isolated, independently running division of a single physical Power Systems server. Each LPAR gets its own allocation of processor, memory, and I/O resources and can run its own operating system, IBM i, AIX, or Linux, separately from every other LPAR on the same physical box. This is how one Power server can consolidate workloads that previously ran on several separate machines.
LPARs are managed by PowerVM, IBM's built-in hypervisor layer. Consolidating multiple AS400/IBM i systems onto fewer, more capable partitions on newer Power hardware is one of the more common reasons a migration project pays for itself.
