AI SIEM implementation

Get useful investigations from your first data sources

Start with a business risk and the records needed to investigate it. Build a SIEM rollout with tested collection and clear ownership before adding more data.

Choose the first AI SIEM investigation

A full inventory matters, but connecting every source at once can delay the first useful result. Start with a real question such as whether an unusual login led to a privileged change on a business system.

Identify the systems needed to answer that question. For a mixed Power estate, the IBM i audit source may need separate forwarding software while a cloud service uses an API. Budget time for both rather than treating every connector as the same task.

Write down the expected decision and who can make it. That gives the first rollout a finish line beyond data appearing in a dashboard.

Make a source register before onboarding

Source onboarding responsibilities

CollectionSender, transport, permissions and recovery after an outage.System owner and SIEM administrator.
Parsing and normalizationOriginal sample and expected timestamp, identity and event fields.Integration maintainer.
DetectionExpected positive case and known benign comparison.Detection owner.

Ongoing supportHealth alerts, update process and escalation contacts.Named service owner.

Choose and test the collection method

Our AI Native SIEM overview describes API integrations and HTTPS collection alongside syslog and HEC options. A local collector can serve internal sources that need a forwarding point. The right choice depends on the actual source and its network arrangement.

Confirm where credentials are stored and which permissions are required. Test encrypted transport and buffering with the responsible administrator. An agreed recovery test should show what happens to queued events after a connection returns.

Keep an independent record of expected event counts during the test. A successful connection alone says little about whether the complete event set arrived.

Check the fields analysts will actually use

Compare received records with the original sample. Confirm time zones and the distinction between event time and arrival time. Preserve the source identifier so two partitions cannot be mistaken for one host.

For IBM i, verify the translation of the audit entry and its outcome. For cloud identity, check account identifiers and tenant scope. Keep original evidence available when normalized fields need explanation.

Record who fixes a parser when an upstream product changes its format. A one-time onboarding success does not establish permanent collection quality.

Test useful detections and ordinary activity together

Use an authorized representative scenario alongside benign activity that resembles it. The goal is a supported investigation rather than a dramatic demonstration.

Have an analyst review the evidence without relying on the AI verdict. Record missing events and the reason a benign case was escalated. Tune the rule or mapping and repeat the same test so the improvement can be checked.

Approve response actions before enabling them

Begin with investigation and prepared recommendations. Enable a state-changing workflow only after the action owner agrees to its scope and approval rules.

Disabling a shared IBM i profile can affect a scheduled business job. Isolating an endpoint can interrupt a service. The case needs the account and system context before a response step is approved.

Review AI permissions and response governance before connecting write-capable tools.

Make the handover a working service

  1. Confirm each critical source has a collection-health alert and owner.
  2. Document tested detections and their known limitations.
  3. Agree on after-hours escalation and containment authority.
  4. Test historical search and evidence export.
  5. Record parser and detection maintenance responsibilities.
  6. Review actual usage against the quoted commercial model.

Keep the rollout open until the receiving team can investigate a case and recover a failed feed. Run the acceptance tests before signing off production use.
