IBM FlashSystem 5200

FlashSystem 5200 4662-6H2 storage and upgrades

Fit NVMe storage into one rack unit with the 5200. We can size FlashCore or standard NVMe drives and add compatible SAS expansion without treating cluster limits as enclosure capacity.

Published maxima describe specific test conditions. Application results depend on the drive population and RAID layout as well as block size, read/write mix and host connections.

FlashSystem 5200 drive choices and capacity

Drive classSupported source context
FlashCore4.8 TB; 9.6 TB; 19.2 TB; 38.4 TB
Standard NVMe800 GB through 30.72 TB in the source
External SASSFF flash and HDD; LFF nearline drives in compatible shelves

Raw capacity is the installed media total before RAID and reserves. Usable capacity is what remains for data; effective capacity also assumes compression or other data reduction.

FlashSystem 5200 configuration limits and source differences

  • The detailed family page gives 70 microseconds latency while the broad FlashSystem overview gives 50. The chosen drive type and measurement must be confirmed.
  • The page calls the controller 1U but its physical-dimension line says 3.4 inches. Verify rack and rail dimensions for the exact enclosure.
  • The 1.2 PB and 32 PB figures do not establish installed RAID-usable capacity.
  • The dedicated page gives 1.7 PB per enclosure and dimensions of 1.7 inches high, 17.5 inches wide and 30.3 inches deep; the family page gives 1.2 PB and a 3.4-inch height. Keep these contexts separate and use the installed chassis for rack planning.

5200 fixed and variable-capacity models

4662-UH6 is described as physically and functionally identical to 4662-6H2, with variable-capacity billing. Confirm the contract and allocated-capacity terms before choosing the utility model.

FlashSystem 5200 software and IBM i attachment

We check the installed IBM Storage Virtualize or Spectrum Virtualize level against the proposed drives and adapters. Features such as replication, encryption and snapshots depend on the model, software level and entitlements.

For IBM i, send the Power model, IBM i release and host adapter details. We check direct or switched attachment and the supported protocol in the IBM System Storage Interoperation Center before finalizing the configuration.

FlashSystem 5200 data services and availability

  • Data-reduction pools, compression, deduplication and thin provisioning.
  • Easy Tier, FlashCopy and remote mirroring.
  • Supported HyperSwap, Safeguarded Copy and Cyber Vault configurations; confirm software and licences.

Room and upgrade requirements for FlashSystem 5200

  1. Identify the installation. Send the complete machine type, serial number and installed software level.
  2. Record capacity and workload. Include installed drive types, RAID layout and current usable space with peak IOPS and latency.
  3. Check rack and power. Record rail depth, service clearance and the existing outlet and PDU connections; include every expansion shelf.
  4. Plan attachment and migration. Include host adapters, switch models and optics with the available migration window.
