What this software needs to solve
A customer-service screen, a report export and a backup can contain the same sensitive data in different forms. The right protection depends on which copy needs protecting and who still needs to use it.
Compare the buying decisions
| Decision | What changes the choice |
|---|---|
| Protection scope | Separate database fields, files, exports and backup copies. |
| Encryption, masking and scrambling | Compare protected storage with restricted display and test-data needs. |
| Application fit | Test the actual data types and business transactions. |
| Key control and recovery | Compare who can use keys, who can administer them and how recovery is tested. |
Which copy of the data needs protection?
Database encryption and file-transfer protection address different copies of the data. Protecting the connection does not establish how a downloaded file is stored or who can open it later.
We would map the sensitive field from its source table to screens, batch jobs, reports and exported files. That map makes it easier to price the scope without buying unrelated modules.
What should each person be able to see?
Encryption protects data using keys. Masking limits what is shown to a user. Scrambling changes data for a defined use such as testing. A package can offer several of these functions, but the desired result should be clear for each user and copy.
A useful demonstration includes an authorized viewer, a restricted viewer and a report export. Application access and storage protection should be assessed separately.
Will the application still process the protected field?
A field can be read by an interactive screen, a batch program and a reporting connection. We would test the same protected field through all three before extending the design to production.
Indexes, integrations, conversion time and resource use belong in the assessment. A product description about avoiding application changes is a starting point for the trial, not a substitute for it.
Can the business recover the data after an outage?
A recoverable backup needs the keys and approved access required to read it. We would rehearse that recovery with the people who would handle an actual outage.
Key rotation and separation of duties should also fit the staffing plan. Our backup and recovery guide connects the data-protection purchase to the restore your business expects.
A useful trial before the purchase
We would build the demonstration around representative work from your environment.
- Read and update a representative protected field through an application and a batch job.
- Compare authorized, masked and denied views through the reporting and export methods in scope.
- Recover a protected test backup with the documented key-recovery process.
What belongs in the software quote
A clear proposal connects the license to the installation and the work your team will run.
- Sensitive fields, files and copies included in the project.
- Applications, reporting tools and supported data types.
- Key administration, rotation and recovery responsibilities.
- Conversion, testing, performance review and ongoing support work.
Midland software and product context
Our catalog includes IBM i field encryption, masking, scrambling, Integrated File System encryption and save-file protection. The field-encryption product describes Db2 FIELDPROC integration; the supported data types and application behavior need a version-specific review.
Catalog and product context checked October 23, 2026. The proposal identifies the edition, licensed scope and supported configuration being offered.
