What this software needs to solve
A system can be running while an overnight process has stopped producing useful work. A monitoring purchase should identify whether the team needs system-health checks, application checks or a view of the business process across systems.
Compare the buying decisions
| Decision | What changes the choice |
|---|---|
| System health | Compare the health checks and thresholds your operation needs. |
| Business-process completion | Compare application outcomes with simple availability checks. |
| Alert ownership | Compare routing, acknowledgements and escalation with the on-call plan. |
| Automated response | Compare approved actions and the safeguards around them. |
Which system condition would interrupt the business?
Storage growth, an unavailable service and a delayed job can require different responses. We would begin with a known operational problem and show how its warning reaches the person who can act.
Thresholds need context. A busy system during a planned close should not be treated exactly like an unexpected load at another time.
Is the work producing the result people need?
An order feed may be connected while no valid orders are being accepted. We would compare a connection check with a check that follows the expected business result.
The useful alert should explain what is missing and which system owns the next action. Our scheduler guide covers the dependencies that may also control that work.
Will someone act on the alert?
An alert becomes useful when someone knows what it means and who is responsible. We would send a test warning through the actual on-call arrangement and include a person who does not acknowledge it.
Repeated warnings for the same incident can hide new problems. Compare grouping, planned-maintenance handling and escalation alongside the list of available checks.
Which fixes should happen without a person?
Restarting a harmless test service is a different decision from rerunning a transaction job. We would document which actions may be automatic and which need approval.
Operational monitoring and security investigation serve different purposes. Our SIEM and Syslog guide covers security events and their use in an investigation.
A useful trial before the purchase
We would build the demonstration around representative work from your environment.
- Create a known test condition and confirm that the correct person receives an understandable warning.
- Keep a test service running while withholding its expected business result, then compare the alerts.
- Rehearse acknowledgement, escalation and an approved recovery action.
What belongs in the software quote
A clear proposal connects the license to the installation and the work your team will run.
- IBM i partitions, related systems and business processes.
- Required checks and their maintenance windows.
- Alert channels, on-call ownership and escalation.
- Permissions for automated actions, setup work and ongoing tuning.
Midland software and product context
IT and business monitoring is an established category in our IBM i software catalog. Package selection starts with the checks and response work your operation needs; a category listing alone does not identify a particular product configuration.
Catalog and product context checked October 23, 2026. The proposal identifies the edition, licensed scope and supported configuration being offered.
