What this software needs to solve
A bank file that arrives late or lands in the wrong format can stop a business process even when the connection worked. A useful comparison follows the file from the source application to the partner accepting it.
Compare the buying decisions
| Decision | What changes the choice |
|---|---|
| Connection and protocol | Keep SFTP and FTPS requirements distinct. |
| File handling | Compare the IBM i source object, encoding, names and completion checks. |
| Scheduling and dependencies | Compare event triggers, job dependencies and partner acknowledgements. |
| Retries and business recovery | Compare restart rules and the risk of sending the same business transaction twice. |
Which connection does the partner accept?
SFTP transfers files over Secure Shell. FTPS protects FTP using a secured connection. Similar names do not make them interchangeable, and a trading partner may require a particular method and authentication setup.
We would compare the partner specification with the proposed client or server role. Key and certificate management, connection restrictions and expiration handling belong in the trial.
Will the partner receive the file it expects?
An exchange may begin with an Integrated File System file or data produced from an IBM i library. The partner may expect a particular character encoding, delimiter or naming convention.
A trial should compare record counts and accepted output, not just a successful transfer message. Transformation and file-level encryption should be identified as included features or separate work.
When is the file actually ready to send?
A clock-based schedule can send an incomplete file when the source job runs late. We would compare a transfer triggered by the completed business job with the timing rules your operation requires.
The next action may depend on the partner accepting the file. Our job-scheduling guide explains why file arrival and successful processing are separate conditions.
What happens when the exchange fails halfway?
An automatic retry can be helpful, but a repeated payment file needs a different response from a repeated reference file. The trial should establish which party decides that the exchange is complete.
We would include a broken connection, a rejected file and an expired test credential. The team member needs a clear explanation and an approved recovery action for each result.
A useful trial before the purchase
We would build the demonstration around representative work from your environment.
- Send a representative test file and have the receiving side validate its contents and format.
- Delay the producing job and confirm that the transfer waits for a complete file.
- Rehearse a failed transfer and a rejected file without creating duplicate business transactions.
What belongs in the software quote
A clear proposal connects the license to the installation and the work your team will run.
- Partner protocols and client or server roles.
- Source files, transformations and file-encryption requirements.
- Schedules, acknowledgements and recovery rules.
- Partitions, partner connections and the people maintaining keys and certificates.
Midland software and product context
Our IBM i SFTP and FTPS catalog describes native file-transfer management with automation, file handling and PGP file-encryption options. The useful comparison is the complete exchange your partner will accept.
