What this software needs to solve
A mainframe record can contain the right information and still be difficult for another system to use. The purchase should explain how that record becomes a usable event or dataset at the destination.
Compare the buying decisions
| Decision | What changes the choice |
|---|---|
| Source records and platform | Name the operating environment and exact source types. |
| Mapping and interpretation | Compare field meanings, identities, timestamps and data conversion. |
| Delivery and workload | Compare capture timing, filtering and recovery under the expected load. |
| Destination and ownership | Separate security investigation from analytics and archive requirements. |
Which mainframe records must leave the system?
A System Management Facilities record, a database extract and application output have different collection and interpretation needs. The source inventory should identify the record types and the information the receiving team needs.
We would keep z/OS, z/VSE and application-specific security work separate in the proposal. A generic mainframe label is not enough to establish support for a particular source.
Will the destination understand what the record means?
The useful result is more than a delivered message. We would compare the original record with the searchable event or data row at the destination.
Account identities, time handling and character conversion should be checked with the people using the result. A successful parser for one record type does not establish every format required by the project.
Can the connection recover without losing track of records?
The trial should define what happens when the receiving application is unavailable. We would compare retained source data, waiting records and the process for resuming delivery.
Mainframe workload and destination costs both belong in the assessment. A useful filter reduces unwanted records without removing the information required for the agreed investigation or business question.
Who will use and maintain the connection?
A security team may need a source event in a SIEM. An analytics team may need a dataset with different fields, update timing and access rules.
The proposal should name the owner of the mapping and the receiving application. The IBM i forwarding guide explains similar buying questions for IBM i, but it does not establish mainframe connector compatibility.
A useful trial before the purchase
We would build the demonstration around representative work from your environment.
- Trace representative source records into correctly interpreted destination records.
- Interrupt the destination and reconcile the records received after recovery.
- Measure the agreed workload and have the receiving team complete its intended investigation or data task.
What belongs in the software quote
A clear proposal connects the license to the installation and the work your team will run.
- Operating environment, versions and exact source record types.
- Receiving application, required fields and conversion rules.
- Volume, capture timing, filtering and delivery recovery.
- Source and destination licenses, setup responsibilities and ongoing support.
Midland software and product context
Our mainframe catalog includes z Series Syslog and SIEM forwarding, Hadoop and Spark integration, and Enforcive/Security for VSE CICS/TS. These are distinct platform and product contexts; a z/OS data-connection requirement should not be treated as a VSE security requirement.
Catalog and product context checked October 23, 2026. The proposal identifies the edition, licensed scope and supported configuration being offered.
