IBM i Backup and Recovery Software

Choose recovery software around the outage your business can handle

Compare IBM i backup, high availability and disaster recovery by the work you need to recover. Find the restore and switchover tests that belong in the buying decision.

What this software needs to solve

A completed backup and a working business application are different milestones. The purchase needs to cover the route from a recoverable copy to the people being able to use the application again.

Compare the buying decisions

Backup, Recovery & Availability buying comparison
DecisionWhat changes the choice
Recovery goalsDefine the recovery time and the acceptable gap in recovered data separately.
Backup and restoreCompare scope, restore order, keys and the place the copy can be recovered.
Replication and high availabilityCompare covered objects, synchronization and the complete role-swap process.
Snapshots and protected copiesCompare copy isolation, retention and application consistency.

How much interruption and lost work can the business accept?

Recovery time objective, or RTO, is the intended time to restore service. Recovery point objective, or RPO, concerns the point in the data that recovery must reach. A design can meet one target and miss the other.

We would begin with the application owner and a representative workload. The target should describe the usable business service, including its connections and required data.

Can the saved copy restore the complete workload?

A backup design should identify applications, data, configuration and the means of reading the copy. A restore trial can expose a missing object or key before an outage does.

Our tape and recovery-storage guides help compare the hardware. The software trial should use the proposed device and the recovery process the team would actually follow.

Will another system be ready to run the work?

High availability uses a prepared arrangement to keep service available or restore it quickly. The comparison should identify what is replicated and what still needs a separate recovery step.

We would rehearse both a planned role swap and the return to the preferred system. A replication-assisted migration has related requirements, but its successful cutover does not establish an ongoing availability service.

Which recovery copy survives an unwanted change?

A snapshot and an independently protected copy may have different dependencies. We would compare who can change or remove the copy and how the application reaches a usable recovery point.

A protected-copy proposal should identify the storage functions, software orchestration and recovery procedure involved. The buyer needs a tested restore, not just a successful copy operation.

A useful trial before the purchase

We would build the demonstration around representative work from your environment.

  1. Recover a representative application and validate its business records with the application owner.
  2. Perform an agreed role swap or recovery rehearsal and measure service readiness against the target.
  3. Restore from the protected copy with the required permissions, keys and storage connections.

What belongs in the software quote

A clear proposal connects the license to the installation and the work your team will run.

  • Application scope and separate recovery-time and recovery-point targets.
  • Source and target partitions, releases, storage and connections.
  • Licenses for backup, replication, automation and storage functions.
  • Recovery rehearsals, staff responsibilities and ongoing monitoring.

Midland software and product context

Our recovery catalog includes IBM i Backup SnapShots, role-swap automation, high-availability software and Safe-Guarded Copy options. Each depends on a particular arrangement of software, partitions and storage; a feature name alone does not establish a complete recovery design.

Catalog and product context checked October 23, 2026. The proposal identifies the edition, licensed scope and supported configuration being offered.
