Inventory Oracle and the application that uses it
| Required detail | Why it changes the plan |
|---|---|
| Oracle release, patch level and edition | The target software, features and migration procedure must fit this exact combination. |
| Source OS, architecture and byte order | HP-UX, Solaris SPARC and Solaris x86 are distinct source platforms. |
| Application vendor certification | A supported database alone does not certify the ERP or application above it. |
| Data size, change rate and outage | Initial copy time and final synchronization determine the feasible approach. |
| Options, encryption, licensing and recovery | Keep feature use and entitlement review with the target design. |
Qualify Oracle on the exact Power operating system
An AIX target is a candidate only when Oracle and the application supplier support the chosen releases and configuration. Generic “Linux support” does not establish Oracle Database engine support on Linux ppc64le. Obtain the exact certification rather than borrowing another architecture’s approval.
An Oracle-backed application can impose a narrower database release or OS choice. Check ERP add-ons, clients, drivers and backup products before choosing an application or database upgrade as part of the move.
Use Oracle’s source and target platform identities
Oracle documents cross-platform data transport and a platform/endian lookup through V$TRANSPORTABLE_PLATFORM. Solaris SPARC and Solaris x86 must not be treated as the same source. Matching byte order can simplify some transfers but does not remove release, feature or transport restrictions.
For a documented method that crosses byte order, include the required conversion steps. Never assume a full physical database backup can simply be restored onto a different OS or processor.
Compare the Oracle transfer procedures
| Method | Planning question |
|---|---|
| Data Pump export and import | Does logical movement cover the required objects and fit the measured outage? |
| Transportable tablespaces or full transportable export/import | Does this exact source/target combination meet Oracle’s release, object and conversion rules? |
| Replication-assisted migration | Is the chosen product certified and licensed for this source, target and data coverage? |
Test logical Oracle export and import with real objects
A logical transfer can expose differences in users, privileges, character sets and application assumptions. Rehearse the selected procedure with representative objects and volume. Check invalid objects, jobs, sequences and application reconnect behavior, not only row counts.
Qualify transportable procedures before estimating the outage
Check Oracle’s documented restrictions for the chosen procedure, including datafile conversion and treatment of metadata. Include the preparation, copy, import and recovery work in the measured rehearsal. An example from another database release is not an executable plan for this one.
Prove replication coverage and the final handover
For a shorter final outage, evaluate an approved replication product with the vendor. Demonstrate coverage of the application’s actual data types and operations. Measure lag, define a final consistency check and document how source writes stop before target writes begin. Replication does not remove cutover or recovery work.
Keep Oracle operations and costs in the decision
Review database options in use, processor/core licensing rules and support with the responsible supplier. Do not infer entitlement from x86 core counts or a smaller physical server. Recreate backup, restore, monitoring and clustering on the approved target.
Have the application owner validate a full business cycle and sign off the cutover and post-write rollback decision.
Plan the Power destination with Midland
Use the assessment to decide which workload belongs on Power before comparing hardware. Midland’s Power model catalog supplies the server identities; software eligibility and measured workload demand decide the configuration.
Prepare the conversion inventory and Bring your current OS, application and database versions to Midland.
Sources and release checks
Technical guidance checked October 21, 2026. Confirm the exact application edition, OS release and target architecture with its vendor before ordering. Older technical papers explain migration methods; they do not establish current certification.
