Start with the platform basics: current hardware generation and its End of Support date, current IBM i release and Technology Refresh level, how many LPARs are in use and what each one runs, and an honest inventory of custom RPG/COBOL applications and third-party software dependencies. Knowing what's actually running, and why, before planning where it's going is what keeps a migration from turning into a surprise.
